![]() ![]() In fact, typically Marked 2 is not the default app for opening markdown files–because you usually want to open your Markdown files with a text editor. The default “open with…” app may or may not be Marked 2. Of course, you open a Markdown file (whether it be via Hook or Finder), the file will open with the default app associated with its file extension (the setting you see when you select the file in Finder and choose the “Open with” Finder command). An exception is that you can optionally, for your convenience, enable Finder tagging of linked files. That's important for syncing with iCloud and Dropbox, because those services don't play nice with xattributes. Thus, unlike OpenMeta, Hook does not write to a file's xattributes. To put it differently: all Hook meta data is stored in Hook's ~/Library folder. Because Hook links are stored in Hook's databases, you don't need to worry about your linked files being modified by Hook. That means with Hook you can navigate between a file opened in Marked 2 and all kinds of other apps. Of course, with Hook you can link Markdown files to just about anything (files, emails, web pages, Agenda Notes, OmniFocus or Things tasks, etc.). This is rather “meta”, and thus illustrative of Hook’s pre-launch code name, “myMeta” (the my* being analogous to our other app mySleepButton) :). Whether you open a Markdown file in Marked 2 or your Markdown editor (e.g., BBEdit or Sublime Text), you will see the same links. “in the context of” means: when the file is open in an app, or selected in a “container” app like Finder, DEVONthink, Evernote, or EagleFiler. Thereafter, when you invoke Hook on either file, whether it is in Marked 2, the Finder, or some other adequately scriptable app, like Sublime Text or BBEdit, you will see its associate. However, when a document is loaded in Marked 2, you can use Hook’s “Link to New” command to link the current Markdown file (say foo.txt) to something else (e.g., bar.txt). Therefore, in the “Link to New” menu of Hook you will not find an entry for Marked 2. Marked 2 is a Markdown previewer, not a composer. It was gratifying to find that Hook works very well with such apps. They are both particularly interesting to write about in relation to Hook because they are both quite innovative apps. So, of course, Marked 2 and nvALT were two of the first apps with which I tested Hook. (I described the latter in both my Cognitive Productivity books). I use nvALT on a daily basis to write notes on my Mac that sync on iOS. ![]() I use Marked 2 to preview every significant document I write in Markdown - including my blog posts. And Markdown apps like Marked 2 and nvALT, both by Brett Terpstra, supercharge my Markdown workflows.

![]() "He thoroughly suppressed crime and lawlessness during his administration," said a local historian writing in 1901. Maginnis was a surprise winner in the nine man race for Mayor in 1875 - the field included Ladder. His first official act as mayor in 1873 was to order all saloons in the city closed on Sunday. Ladder tried to initiate some reforms, but had little success. Maginnis, who came to Hamilton in 1861 and had been branded a Copperhead during the Civil War, had been mayor from 1871 to 1873, but was defeated by John B. Maginnis, a native of Maryland, to the Office of Mayor of Hamilton. The change, in 1875, came with the election of Michael N. "Hamilton had been for a long time terrorized by the criminal classes," a city historian noted in commenting on the events which led to the formation of the Hamilton Police Department in 1875. The creation of the department followed a 10-year period of lawlessness which included everything from gambling and production and sale of illegal whiskey to political tampering and a series of murders. Then 46 years later, members of the Hamilton Police Department began discharging their duties. Modern policing started in 1829 when Sir Robert Peele created the London, England Metropolitan Police. In addition to these duties, the Operations Bureau Captain oversees the coordination of the internal affairs function and the deployment of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team. The Operations Bureau includes the day-to-day operations of the Patrol Division, Traffic Division, and the Detective Division. The Support Services Lieutenant ensures that all department property and equipment is properly maintained and accounted for. The Support Services Bureau includes the Central Records, Court Services, Training, Public Affairs, and Neighborhood Policing sections. The Hamilton Police Department is divided into two bureaus with different and distinct responsibilities: the Support Services Bureau and the Operations Bureau. The Hamilton Police Department consists of 115 full-time sworn men and women, 13 civilian personnel, and 8 Corrections Officers. CALEA accreditation affirms the professional status of Law Enforcement agencies worldwide. The department serves a population of over 62,000 residents and is committed to providing the community with “Exceptional Police Service for a Better Hamilton.” The City of Hamilton Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1990, when the department became the 139th internationally accredited law enforcement agency. Represents the largest municipality in Butler County, Ohio. Our mission is embodied in our commitment to public safety through community engagement designed to support the vision of Hamilton as a purposeful destination to work, live, and play. It instead comes from something that might’ve been brought out in revision but feels so natural: the poem’s ongoing repetition, which is not repetition of symbol or language or anything other than the phrase:Īnd it’s hard for me to write about these lines without my eyes welling up a bit, and I don’t know why other than the fact that Berman’s poetry inspires that welling-up - that part of me I thought I had aged out of but that really we never do. Today’s poem inspires what I think is one of the best feelings that a poem can inspire - that almost- aha moment when you say oh, a poem can do this ! And that moment for me comes not from some immense amount of trickery or subtle craft - though I’ve read that Berman was a meticulous crafter and reviser of his poems. I find the book at the top of one of my bookshelves, and I flip to a dogeared page, and I read this poem, and I laugh a little to myself, and I moan some long moan of sorrow, and I wonder and I grow curious, and I finish the poem, and then I do it all again.Īnd I think I’m reading this poem over and over again because, in part, I’m rethinking how to approach my own act of writing poetry, and reading Berman feels almost exhilarating. Īnd so I’ve been turning to today’s poem so frequently lately, and I don’t know why. Oh, I said in the back of my mind - that’s Merwin. I caught myself just as the last few words slipped out. I said the poem in its entirety, almost out of reflex. I recited the latter poem to my fiancee the other night, as we were getting ready for bed and turning each light off. Or I think about Louise Gluck’s “Telemachus’ Detachment,” which reads, in its entirety: The entirety of Jamaal May’s Hum, or Terrance Hayes’ Lighthead, or Linda Gregg’s All of It Singing, or anything by Steve Scafidi. I kept The Selected Levis in a stack on my desk, and whenever I felt anything - literally anything - I turned to the page where that stanza was, and I read it, once again, to feel. I wondered what it meant when Levis wrote that someone might “finally play.” I wanted to know what it might be like to play a piano in that way. I was maybe 24 or 25 when I first read that stanza, and I thought of the whole thing like a short story. ![]() The first poem that did this for me was “The Double,” by Larry Levis, which fit the entirety of all-the-feeling-I-could-muster into one stanza that read: Maybe you have poems like this, maybe sometimes? A poem dog-eared so frequently that the triangle on the top corner of the page has lopped itself off, and left the page fragmented, missing one small corner of itself? Not necessarily about this poem in the specific, but about what makes a poem something that one turns to. And this poem - “Classic Water” - is my most turned-to poem in Berman’s book.Īnd if I could, I’d like to talk a bit about that turning-to. And now, my copy of Actual Air sits on this strange pedestal of books I keep on top of a bookshelf, sandwiched between Thomas Lux’s collected and another James Tate’s The Government Lake. ![]() But a latecomer - sometimes, and often gratefully - still arrives. When he passed a few years ago, I was not an avid listener of Silver Jews, and I had not really heard of Actual Air - his only published book of poems. But I am a latecomer to David Berman’s poetry. For instance, with a typical trade paperback comic book format, 9 panels per page should be considered the max. Note: with different formats, you’ll have different numbers of panels per page. Artists usually like to work with larger panels that can show more rather than a bunch of small panels. And try not to crowd your pages with too many words or panels. Also try to advance the story as much as possible through dialogue (rather than text blocks). ![]() ![]() The most important thing to remember in writing the script is that the images must tell part most of the story (that’s why it helps to think visually first). What the script for the above inked page looks like. Then find the form that best fits those needs and the needs of the audiences you want to reach (reading other books that are reaching that audience is a good way to do this). And what effect you want the format to have on the reader. What colors and styles the story demands. So ask yourself early on, “What do I want this story to look like, and where do I want it to end up?”Īre you going for a traditional trade paperback comic format? A graphic novel? American manga? An online, digital comic? A black & white graphic memoir? A collaboration or writer/artist work? An art book or short letter press book? It’s going to determine how the story is structured and paced, and what the style of the story might be. Some folks might suggest doing this after you’ve written a script, but I think it’s best to do it before, because the format is more than just a publishing platform or the shape of the page.
